How to Find Clients as a Financial Advisor: A Practical Growth Guide (2026)

Quick Answer: How Do Financial Advisors Find New Clients?
Financial advisors find new clients by combining structured lead generation tools like seminars, calculators and books, with client-facing planning software that closes conversations in the meeting. The advisors who grow consistently stack these approaches into a repeatable system rather than relying on any single method.

A referral comes in. The meeting goes well. The prospect leaves without committing.

That scenario is more common than most advisors want to admit. Growing a practice is not simply about being good at planning. It is about creating the conditions where a prospect decides, in the meeting, that they have found the right advisor.

This guide walks through the practical ways independent advisors can find more clients in 2026. We cover the software you run in a prospect meeting, the lead generation tools that fill your pipeline, the books and marketing materials that position you as the expert, and the training and coaching that sharpens the conversation. At the end, we show how Stonewood’s membership brings all of it together in one place.

All information in this article is general knowledge and widely available. At Stonewood, we are not CPAs. We build analysis tools that help advisors model strategies for client conversations. For any specific client situation, always work with a qualified tax professional.

Software: Close the Client in the Meeting

Before any marketing strategy can help you grow, you need a prospect meeting that actually converts. For many independent advisors, the gap is not in the marketing… it’s in what happens at the table.

The advisors who close the most business tend to do one thing consistently: they show rather than tell. Instead of explaining a tax strategy in the abstract, they run the numbers live and let the prospect see the trade-off on a page.

Stonewood has built four client-facing software tools specifically for this purpose. Over 214,000 reports have been run across the suite – helping growth-minded advisors have better conversations around income, taxes or legacy.⁹ You can explore all four at stonewoodfinancial.com/software, and request a free sample.

How Software Helps You Find and Win Clients

A client-facing report does three things a conversation alone cannot.

#1 | It makes the problem visible. A prospect who cannot see the size of their tax liability in retirement may not feel urgency. A report that shows a projected tax bill in their specific situation changes that.

#2 | It builds trust faster. Showing a prospect their numbers, in the meeting, signals competence and preparation. It shortens the trust-building phase that would otherwise take multiple appointments.

#3 | It creates a reason to act – and a cost of inaction. A side-by-side comparison of two approaches gives the prospect a decision to make, not a concept to consider. Decisions close business. Concepts do not.

Roth Done Right

Multi-year Roth conversion and IRMAA analysis, built for the prospect meeting.

A prospect with a large IRA potentially has a large tax bill coming due in retirement – and that’s a real opportunity. The question is whether you can make that opportunity visible quickly enough to earn the engagement.

Roth Done Right models multi-year Roth conversion scenarios and accounts for the short-term and long-term Medicare IRMAA cost of converting. The output is a client-facing report that helps a client move forward with confidence.

The best part? You don’t need a client’s tax return to run it, making it perfect for first meetings and beyond.

Annuity Alpha

FIA vs. brokerage income comparison for the retirement income conversation.

Annuity Alpha gives advisors a side-by-side comparison of a fixed indexed annuity guarantee and the growth needed in a brokerage account to achieve the same income.

The output is meeting ready and designed to uncover the real growth needed in a brokerage account to match an FIA guarantee.

Often called the “Ken Fisher killer” by advisors, this quick report dispels myth and lets clients make informed choices based on real insights.

Legacy Done Right

Estate and legacy analysis that opens a conversation many advisors never start.

Many mass affluent clients have not had a real conversation about what happens to their assets when they pass. Legacy Done Right gives advisors a structured analysis tool for estate and legacy planning with life insurance.

What’s more? The software can model legacy-focused Roth conversions, Roth / Life blends, and even strategies leveraging bonus annuities. It’s the quickest way to open up conversations about legacy assets fast.

Total Tax Burden

A 60-second tax snapshot that creates urgency before the first appointment is even over.

Total Tax Burden generates a snapshot of a prospect’s projected taxes paid in retirement – and the potential tax savings of working with you as their advisor.

The best part? No tax return needed. A prospect with $800,000 in IRA savings can see, in roughly 60 seconds, what a different approach might mean for their retirement.

That kind of concrete, immediate clarity is what converts a skeptical prospect into an engaged client. Advisors use this as an early-meeting trust builder before moving into a deeper Roth analysis.

Lead Generation: Filling the Pipeline Before the Meeting

Software closes the prospect who is already in the meeting. Lead generation creates the meeting in the first place. The best independent advisors treat lead generation as a system, not a one-time campaign.

Stonewood’s marketing and lead generation tools are built around the same retirement tax message that powers its software, so your marketing and your prospect meeting tell a single, connected story.

Retirement Tax Bill Lead Generator

The RTB Lead Generator is Stonewood’s flagship lead nurture tool. It brings Stonewood’s tax analysis directly to prospects through a digital lead funnel, combining custom landing pages, calculators, and follow-up sequences.

Advisors who have built their pipeline around this message report that prospects arrive at the first conversation already focused on the tax question. It can be used in seminars, email marketing, social media campaigns and more.

Seminars and Webinars

Stonewood’s seminar and webinar content gives advisors proven presentations built around the retirement tax and income topics that resonate most with the mass affluent retiree market. Each presentation is designed to generate appointments rather than simply educate an audience.

Three current presentations include The Rising Tax Risk in Retirement, Washington’s Impact on Your Retirement, and Maximizing Your Legacy. Webinars complement in-person seminars for advisors who want to reach a broader geographic area or reduce event overhead. Learn more here.

Email Funnels & More

Stonewood’s marketing toolkits include brochures, email sequences, social media resources, and client-ready materials organized around today’s top-converting savings topics. Each toolkit is built to feed directly into the software and reports, giving advisors a unified story from prospecting through the client meeting.

Books: Position Yourself as the Expert Before the First Meeting

A book does something a brochure rarely can. It positions you as a thought leader, not just a product provider. Prospects who read even part of a book before their first appointment arrive better informed and more open to the planning conversation you want to lead.

Stonewood offers four consumer books that advisors use as seminar giveaways, lead capture tools, podcast & radio giveaways and client appreciation gifts. All four are available through the Stonewood books program.

Whether you’re talking taxes, income, legacy or lifespan, Stonewood has a book to move the conversation forward.

Training and Coaching: Sharpen the Conversation That Closes Business

Technical knowledge and client communication are different skills. The advisor who deeply understands a Roth conversion strategy but has not practiced explaining the trade-off in plain language will often find that prospects are interested but not converting.

Stonewood’s training programs are built around one goal: help advisors improve how they evaluate, communicate, and close business with their clients.

Over 8,000 advisors have trained with Stonewood.⁹ The consistent finding is that advisors who develop both planning knowledge and client conversation skills close more business than those who focus on one alone. Here are the top three ways advisors are leveraging Stonewood training to grow their practices:

Innovate Conference

Stonewood’s flagship practice development event brings independent advisors together for two days of training on tax strategies, income approaches, marketing systems, and sales language. Sessions are taught by Stonewood’s leadership team and supported by industry partners.

Past attendees consistently describe Innovate as the most practical training event they have attended. Sessions are built around specific client conversation angles and sales approaches advisors can bring into their next prospect meeting, not just conceptual frameworks. Learn more about Stonewood’s Innovate Conference.

Monthly Study Group Calls

Stonewood’s Study Group calls run monthly and focus on what is current: legislative changes, client conversation strategies tied to the current environment, and planning updates that affect the mass affluent retiree market.

Advisors use these calls to stay current and bring specific questions from their practices. The monthly cadence builds in the reinforcement that changes behavior over time rather than letting new ideas stall in a notebook.

One-on-One Coaching

Individual coaching gives advisors personalized feedback on how they are structuring a prospect meeting, positioning a specific planning strategy, or building a repeatable seminar or webinar system.

Coaching works best when the advisor walks in with a specific goal, such as improving close rates on Roth conversion conversations or incorporating Stonewood’s reports into the discovery process more consistently.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do financial advisors find clients in 2026?

Financial advisors find clients through a combination of client-facing planning software that closes conversations in the meeting, structured lead generation through seminars, webinars, and books, and coaching that sharpens the discovery conversation. Advisors who grow consistently connect these approaches into a repeatable system rather than relying on any one channel.

What software do financial advisors use to close prospects?

Stonewood offers four client-facing tools for independent advisors: Roth Done Right for multi-year Roth conversion and IRMAA analysis, Annuity Alpha for FIA versus brokerage income comparison, Legacy Done Right for estate planning conversations, and Total Tax Burden for a fast tax snapshot without a tax return. All four are available at stonewoodfinancial.com/software.

Are Roth conversions still worth discussing with clients after the One Big Beautiful Act?

At Stonewood, our view is yes. OBBBA made today’s rates permanent under current law, but permanent doesn’t mean unchangeable, and Congress still has to vote to change them. Given projected government revenue needs and the general unpredictability of tax legislation, many analysts expect rates to trend toward pre-TCJA levels within the next decade. The window for Roth conversions is wider, not closed.

What lead generation tools work best for independent financial advisors?

For independent advisors serving the mass affluent retirement market, seminar and webinar programs built around retirement tax topics tend to produce highly engaged prospects. Stonewood’s Retirement Tax Bill Lead Generator combines a digital lead funnel with tax analysis, bringing pre-qualified prospects into a first conversation already focused on the planning question.

How can financial advisor coaching improve client acquisition?

Coaching sharpens the client conversation skills that convert prospects into clients: how to structure discovery, how to explain complex strategies clearly, and how to move from a planning analysis to a clear next step. The 2024 ICF/PwC Global Coaching Client Study reported a median coaching return of 5 to 7 times the cost of the program.¹

What does Stonewood membership include?

Stonewood membership gives independent advisors access to client-facing software (Roth Done Right, Annuity Alpha, Legacy Done Right, Total Tax Burden), lead generation tools and marketing toolkits, consumer books, Study Group calls, virtual training, and one-on-one coaching. Premium+ members also receive complimentary Innovate conference attendance. See full details at stonewoodfinancial.com/pricing.

What is the difference between Stonewood and an IMO?

Stonewood is a tools and enablement partner for independent financial advisors, not an IMO. Stonewood does not take commission cuts and does not compete with IMOs for advisor business. The software and training tools are designed to work with any carrier through any IMO, giving advisors flexibility rather than restrictions.

Real Advisors. Real Results.

An advisor was working with a prospect who was a real "do-it-yourselfer" when it came to Roth conversions. The client was converting assets up their existing tax bracket – and hadn't considered any impact to IRMAA.

With Roth Done Right, the advisor was able to show an alternate pattern that sped up the conversion to 6 years. The new structure offered $30,000 savings in conversion taxes – a 20% reduction on the prospect's conversion tax bill. The report also showed hundreds of thousands of dollars in long-term tax and IRMAA savings from the converted assets – an amount the prospect hadn't been able to quantify on his own.

Outcome

A new client with $1M in new AUM, and a $1M FIA sale to fund the conversion process.

An advisor was working with a prospect who already had assets with Ken Fisher. Fisher's team presented a 5% systematic withdrawal projection, so the advisor needed a stronger way to frame the income conversation.

Using the Annuity Alpha report, the advisor showed how an annuity could deliver over 8% in annual cash flow with lifetime income, plus a long-term care doubler. The contrast was clear enough that the prospect moved forward.

Outcome

$1.5M placed and a $100K in new business revenue.

An advisor was working with a 58-year-old couple with an established, well-funded retirement income plan, leaving an additional $3M IRA to build out a legacy for the kids. The couple's existing advisor had no real additional plan for this money, other than to keep it in their managed account and grow that money as much as possible for the kids.

Using the Legacy Done Right report, the advisor showed the need for tax planning on this $3M IRA. According to the advisor, the simple analysis "opened up the wallet" to the Roth conversion story. The advisor then used the blended Roth/Life feature in the report to show a blend of Roth Conversion assets with some Life Insurance to help maximize the client’s legacy.

Outcome

$3M in motion. The advisor picked up a $1.5M FIA sale that will be converted to Roth. And the advisor also sold a 5-Pay Protection focused IUL policy at $225,000 of premium per year.

An advisor group incorporated the Total Tax Burden report into the strategy presentation for all new prospects. They ran the tax snapshot for every new client as part of their first meeting conversation, quantifying the growing tax burden of IRA money – and illustrating the kinds of tax savings possible when working with their firm.

Starting in January of 2023, this simple analysis was presented to every single prospect who walked in the door. The goal was to differentiate their practice and drive overall revenue growth through various Roth conversion strategies.

Outcome

From 2022 to 2025, new annual AUM rose from $5M to $50M. Annual FIA sales rose from $3M to $35M. And annual life premium rose from $50K to $1M.
